Big Bear Gets An Oil Change

Big Bear, our ATV is our workhorse (towing loads of wood and tools), sometimes a transporter (gets us from here to there and back when we don't feel like walking, which usually applies to Johny), and a pleasure cruiser (up and around through the mountains). Big Bear has been the best major investment we've made while here at the cabin--except for the deck but that's a different kind of thing. Bear got an oil change today, and I wanted to see how it's done.

Johny made a little ramp lift.
He unscrewed the necessary parts...
...like the plow plate (not all ATVs have this).
He removed the cap to the oil tank...
...and the oil came pouring out.
He then pulled out the screen which did a good job collecting "engine debris".
He cleaned it using a little gasoline, and it was almost like new.

Now to remove the filter...
...it also did its job, look at how dirty it is compared to the new one!
And replace it...
...using an Allen wrench that measured millimeters to tighten the bolts.
After replacing the screen and the tank cap...
...pour in the oil. Three quarts plus a little more.
Now replace the oil cap...
...and the plow plate.
Looks simple, right? Yes and no. There's a lot of squatting and reaching into little places...so glad I don't have to be the one doing this. Thanks Mountain Man!

And here's a happy Big Bear, cleaned up inside and even a little outside. Lets go for a ride!

Thanks for reading my blog, you are the best f/f/r/s/f's, see you tomorrow,
Lise

It's so important to learn how to do things like this. I used to want to learn my way around an engine, but that was back before everything became computerized, and the older more straightforward engines were much more interesting (and easier to learn!)Now with bad knees I don't think I could do anything anymore! But it's always a good thing to learn different skills, especially if you are a woman. Wish my daughter would show an interest.

I agree Marie. I remember when I had to change my first flat tire by myself, I was so happy my dad taught me and relieved then proud that I could actually do it!
