A Lone Wild Sunflower

I love sunflowers, they're so bright and cheery...unfortunately I don't have much luck growing them.  I've planted two packages of seeds, and so far, nothing.  That's why I was enchanted when I came upon this lone, wild sunflower standing proudly at the edge of our woods.
I first spotted it a couple days ago on my way to the garden...it was still unfurling...

...today it's fully opened and attracting lots of insects and one lone butterfly with its nectar (I tried to get a photo of the butterfly on it but it flew away too quickly).
The curl of its little florets is so dainty...
....and the swirl in the center appears like velvety little barbs...
...a very pleasant bright spot on the walk to and from the garden!

Speaking of the garden, look...little watermelon!  Though I've seen lots of blooms, I didn't see any fruit...there were three that I found today, these two and one other, but there are still lots of blossoms and bees buzzing about, so I'm sure we'll have more watermelon:)

Thanks for reading my blog, you are the best f/f/r/s/f's, see you tomorrow,
Lise

  1. I love your sunflower. Like you I have no luck at all with sunflowers. But I tried my luck again this year on Morning Glories and they are very pretty. My mother used to say when Morning Glories stay open all day it won't be long till frost.. Hugs, xo

  2. Susie, yeah for you with the morning glories...are they staying open all day? Up here in the mountains it sure does feel like frost is just around the corner!

    Thanks Carver!
